Last year, I read an amazing book that changed so many of the ways I do things. 'FINISH... give yourself the gift of done' by Jon Acuff is that book. If you haven't read it, you should consider moving it to the top of your reading list for 2021. Here's why...
Starting a new project, a new diet, a new goal is the easy part. We have so much excitement, motivation and grit that throws us into the goal game. Much to our chagrin, most of these don't last very long. There are many reasons for this and for sure, there are those who complete every goal they make. However, that's just not me... or most anyone I know.
I was complaining one day to a friend of mine who immediately said that I had to get this book. She was right! It was an easy read and was practical from every angle I thought about it. I want to share TWO things, among many, that made a real difference to me.
The author says to immediately cut our goals in half. The adrenaline and joy that will come at our halfway mark will give us that boost to do it again. If our goals are so big that they have failure built into them, we will suffer and ultimately stay in the same place. Cut them in half... smaller bites and more chewable, and we are more likely to continue on to the ultimate destination! I tried it and it totally worked. If you want to lose weight, half the pounds and go from there. If you want to read 12 books this year, start with 6. If you want to make $10,000 extra this year, start with the goal of $5.000. That tiny shift in your head will be huge in your achievement.
The author says that the most effective exercises were not those that pushed people to work harder, but those that took the pressure off. Why? He states:
"Because the sneakiest obstacle to meeting your goals is not laziness, but perfectionism. We’re our own worst critics, and if it looks like we’re not going to do something right, we prefer not to do it at all. That’s why we’re most likely to quit on day two, “the day after perfect”—when our results almost always underperform our aspirations."
We can change that! Isn't that thought (and reality) freeing and empowering at the same time? Give yourself "the gift of done" this year!
