I've been on a protein kick lately. Actually, I've been receiving some nutritional coaching, learning to count macros (macronutrients) and now I'm on the continual hunt for protein-rich foods!
So what's so great about protein?
First, protein is the most satiating of the macros. Each gram of both carbs and protein contains 4 calories. But because protein is denser, we feel fuller longer. Protein also helps to speed up our metabolism, which can in turn help promote weight loss. It's also important for healthy hair and nails. Probably most important (in this time of pandemic) is the fact that protein promotes a healthy immune system!
Which foods are high in protein?
Eggs
Edamame
Cottage Cheese
Chicken
Black beans
Tuna
Salmon
Shrimp
Tofu
Turkey
Greek Yogurt
Lentils
Milk
Chickpeas (think hummus)
The next time you need a snack, think about trying a protein-rich food. For example, switch out that sour cream for plain, nonfat Greek yogurt and stir in your favorite Ranch dressing seasoning packet. Dip your favorite fresh veggies and enjoy! A half-cup serving can give you as much as 15 grams of protein!
What are your favorite protein sources?
